When New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez comes home to The Colony, the whole community shows up. Last Saturday, the LISD alum and Pro Bowl defensive back hosted a community fun day at his high school alma mater, Tommy Briggs Stadium at The Colony High School, drawing more than 1,500 attendees for a day packed with free services, entertainment, and giving back.

Gonzalez grew up in The Colony and played football and wide receiver for The Colony High School under head coach Rudy Rangel. He went on to play at the University of Colorado and Oregon before the New England Patriots selected him with the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. In the 2025-26 season, he earned his first Pro Bowl selection and played in Super Bowl LX in February 2026 against the Seattle Seahawks, cementing his status as one of the top young cornerbacks in the league.

For a player at his level to come back to his high school neighborhood and do something this substantial for the community is exactly the kind of story that makes North Texas sports worth following. The event included a major food drive with donations going directly to families in need throughout the northern DFW area. Inside the stadium, Gonzalez organized free services for attendees including inflatables for kids, therapy dogs, dental screenings, and other family resources. The evening closed with a celebrity basketball game.

Coach Rangel, who coached Gonzalez during his junior and senior seasons, has watched his former player grow from a quiet but gifted teenager into one of the NFL's most complete corners. What stands out to him, and to everyone who has followed Gonzalez's career, is that the talent and the character have always gone hand in hand. The Colony community produced this one, and he has never stopped showing it.

Lewisville Public Library Summer Reading Ends August 1. Here Is How to Join Before the Deadline

There are two weeks left to participate in the Lewisville Public Library's Destination Summer reading program, and the deadline to turn in your reading log is August 1. If your kids have not signed up yet, there is still time and the rewards are genuinely worth it.

The program is free and open to all ages, from young children through adults. The challenge is simple: choose to read 25 books, 25 hours, or 25 days over the summer. Complete the challenge, turn in your reading log at the library by August 1, and earn a free book plus an entry into prize drawings. Kids, teens, and adults each have their own prize pool.

Beyond the reading challenge, the library has been running free weekly programs all summer that are worth knowing about. Elementary Explorations, a hands-on themed program for kids, meets Thursdays at 3:30 PM and this Saturday July 19th the theme is Pop-Up Books. Teen programs include art events, gaming afternoons, and skills workshops running through August. Adult programs run through The Hive makerspace, the library's creative technology space, with classes in various skills and crafts. There are also monthly book clubs for readers of all preferences.

LISD Approves $321K Salary Package to Attract Hard-to-Fill Teaching Positions

Lewisville ISD is investing in one of the most persistent challenges facing Texas school districts: filling specialized teaching and support roles that are genuinely hard to staff. The LISD Board of Trustees has approved a $321,000 package of market-based salary adjustments for the 2026-27 school year, targeting positions where the district has had difficulty competing with other employers.

The adjustments are specifically designed to bring LISD salaries in line with what peer districts and the broader market are paying for roles that have consistently been difficult to fill or retain. These are positions where Lewisville has had to work harder to recruit, and where losing experienced employees is costly because of the specialized training and certifications involved. Bilingual teachers, special education specialists, and counselors tend to fall into these categories across most Texas districts.

This salary action follows the much larger $11 million investment in teacher and staff compensation that the board approved for the 2026-27 year, which we covered in Issue #004. While that earlier action included across-the-board raises for all employees, the $321,000 package announced this week is targeted specifically at roles where the district is losing ground competitively. Together they represent LISD's most significant investment in workforce compensation in several years.

Sunday — Songs Without Words at LLELA. The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area hosts an opening reception and performance from 6 to 8 PM at 201 E. Jones Street. This free outdoor arts event uses one of Lewisville's most beautiful natural settings as the backdrop for a live performance. No ticket required. Third Sunday Nature Talk also runs the same morning from 9 to 11 AM for those who want a full day at LLELA.

Also Sunday — the World Cup Final at 3 PM ET. The 2026 FIFA World Cup wraps up at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Watch locally at sports bars across Lewisville.
