Headed to Lewisville Lake This Weekend? Read This Before You Go.

Every summer, Lewisville Lake draws millions of visitors looking to escape the Texas heat. And every summer, people drown there. The lake consistently ranks among the deadliest in the state, and with the July 4th holiday weekend bringing massive crowds to the water, Texas Game Wardens and local officials are urging residents to take safety seriously before they go.

There has already been one drowning on the lake this past May, and authorities say many of these deaths are preventable. The single most important thing anyone can do, according to the Texas Game Warden, is wear a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times in the water. This applies to swimmers and boaters alike, not just young children.

Weather is a significant concern this weekend in particular. The National Weather Service is forecasting scattered storms on and off across Denton County through the holiday. If you hear any thunder or see lightning, get out of the lake immediately. High winds can also create dangerous wave conditions even for strong swimmers and experienced boaters.

Alcohol is another major factor. According to the CDC, alcohol use is involved in up to 70 percent of water recreation deaths, and Texas Game Wardens made a record number of boating while intoxicated arrests over this past Memorial Day weekend. Wardens will be actively patrolling Lewisville Lake through the holiday weekend.

One important note: Lewisville Lake Park remains closed due to recent flooding and storm damage, and all boat ramps at the park are shut down. Boaters can use the Tower Bay Boat Ramp as an alternative.

The Red Cross Needs Blood Donors Now

The American Red Cross is sounding the alarm on blood supply this summer, and North Texas residents can help. The organization is reporting a sharp decline in scheduled blood donations heading into the holiday season, and is urging anyone who is eligible to book an appointment before the summer shortage worsens further.

Blood donations consistently dip during the summer months as travel, vacations and holiday weekends reduce donor turnout. The Red Cross has reported needing thousands of additional donations each week just to keep hospital shelves stocked. Type O blood donors and platelet donors are in especially high demand.

Donating takes about an hour from start to finish. You need to be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in generally good health. The Red Cross has two North Texas donation centers near Lewisville: the Irving Blood and Platelet Donation Center and the Plano Blood and Platelet Donation Center, both open seven days a week.

What Is Open and What Is Closed This July 4th Weekend

The Fourth of July is Friday this year. City offices are closed Friday July 3 in observance of Independence Day. All essential city services including police, fire, water and utilities continue operating normally.

Lewisville Lake Park remains closed due to ongoing flooding and storm damage. Boaters can use the Tower Bay Boat Ramp. Trails at LLELA have partially reopened — Blackjack, Green Dragon, Cicada and Cottonwood trails are accessible west of the Cicada Pavilion. Trails east of the pavilion remain closed.

For Fourth of July celebrations on Saturday: Sam’s Dock Boat Rentals and Party Barges is hosting the DFW 4th of July Ladies Boat Bash at 6:30 PM, and Chill Bar and Grill has Red Solo Cup LIVE at 7:30 PM.
