Three-Alarm Fire Breaks Out at Killough High School Overnight During Renovations

A three-alarm fire broke out late Tuesday night at the Lewisville High School Killough campus, sending multiple fire crews into action and drawing a major response from departments across southern Denton County. The campus, which is currently undergoing renovations, was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 9:30 PM after a neighbor called 911 to report black smoke coming from the building. When Lewisville Fire Department units arrived, they found heavy smoke and an active fire burning on the school's roof. Dispatchers had initially toned out for a possible commercial structure fire, and Lewisville FD immediately sent 11 units to the large building.

Firefighters from Flower Mound, Lake Cities, The Colony and Carrollton all responded to assist Lewisville crews. Teams used ladders, ventilation saws and aggressive water lines to contain the blaze and prevent it from breaching interior classrooms and hallways. Battalion Chief Delane Graham said that everyone did their job, which helped crews put the fire out efficiently. Lewisville FD publicly thanked its mutual aid partners for their fast response.

Investigators noted that crews smelled what appeared to be fireworks near the scene when they arrived, though the official cause of the fire has not been confirmed and remains under investigation. The extent of structural damage to the campus has not yet been released by officials.

Killough is one of the Lewisville ISD campuses currently in the middle of a $112.5 million renovation and repair cycle approved by the board of trustees earlier this year. LISD has not yet issued a statement on how the fire may affect the renovation timeline. Lewisville Firefighters Earn National PETA Award for Last Week's Duckling Rescue

The Lewisville firefighters who rescued three ducklings from a storm drain last week are getting some well-deserved national recognition. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has honored the Lewisville Fire Department with its Compassionate Fire Department Award, adding a heartwarming ending to a story that already had the whole city smiling.

As Lewisville Connect readers already know from last issue, members of the department were finishing a workout walk on June 24 when they spotted a mother duck quacking frantically near a water overflow drain. One firefighter stopped to investigate and found three small ducklings had fallen in and were unable to climb out. The crew worked together to descend into the drain, recover all three ducklings safely, and reunite them with their mother. They also placed rocks around the drain afterward to help prevent the same thing from happening again.

PETA's Compassionate Fire Department Award recognizes emergency responders who go above and beyond to protect animals in need. The award comes with a framed certificate and, in the tradition of PETA awards, vegan chocolates for the crew.

The Lewisville Fire Department responded graciously to the recognition, staying true to the spirit they showed in the original rescue. As they said when the story first went viral: they are always glad to help their community, no matter how small. Given that this week they also fought a three-alarm fire at Killough High School overnight, it is fair to say Lewisville's firefighters are having quite a week.

Tonight is the main event. Red White & Lewisville kicks off at 6:30 PM at Wayne Ferguson Plaza in Old Town with live music from Justin Till, followed by Texas Flood. Stick around until around 9:30 PM for a drone show and low-level fireworks display launched from the roof of the Lewisville Grand Theater. This one is completely free, family friendly, and has food vendors on site all night. Bring chairs and blankets but skip the canopies and glass containers.

On Saturday July 4th, Lewisville Lake is the place to be. Sam's Dock Boat Rentals and Party Barges is hosting the DFW 4th of July Ladies Boat Bash starting at 6:30 PM on the lake, and Chill Bar and Grill in Lewisville is hosting Red Solo Cup LIVE at 7:30 PM for those who prefer their celebration on dry land.

City offices are closed Friday July 3rd in observance of Independence Day. All essential services including police, fire, and utilities continue operating normally through the holiday weekend.

A reminder for anyone planning time on Lewisville Lake this weekend: expect heavy boat traffic, bring life jackets for everyone on board, and be mindful of increased law enforcement presence on the water.
