West Nile Alert: Denton County Has Its First Human Case. Here Is What Lewisville Residents Need to Know.

Denton County Public Health confirmed its first human case of West Nile virus for 2026 on July 10, and the situation has been escalating since. As of July 16, 25 mosquito traps across the county have tested positive for the virus, and local health officials are urging residents to take preventive action now.

The confirmed patient lives in the City of Denton and was diagnosed with the non-neuroinvasive form of West Nile, meaning the virus did not affect the central nervous system. Denton County Public Health is not releasing further personal details to protect patient confidentiality. While the majority of people who contract West Nile virus experience no symptoms at all, about one in five develop fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, or rash. Less than one percent develop the neuroinvasive form, which can be life-threatening. Two Denton County residents died from neuroinvasive West Nile in 2024.

Lewisville has already had two positive mosquito traps this season, including one on the 200 block of Highland Drive confirmed earlier in the summer. The city responded with ground spraying on July 14 and 15 in the area around Rachel's Court after a second positive trap was confirmed. Vector Disease Control International, Lewisville's contracted mosquito control company, tests nine core sites in the city regularly throughout the season.

With 25 positive traps now active across Denton County, this is peak West Nile season. Here is what county health officials are asking every resident to do right now. Drain any standing water on your property, including bird baths, flowerpots, clogged gutters, and buckets, since mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap of water standing for three days. Use EPA-registered insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus every time you go outside. Wear long sleeves and pants during evening hours when mosquitoes are most active. Make sure window and door screens have no gaps or holes.

The City of Lewisville offers free mosquito dunks to residents for treating standing water that cannot be drained, such as ponds or rain barrels. Pick them up at Lewisville City Hall, Permitting Counter on the second floor, 151 W. Church Street, during normal business hours. Proof of residency required. Meet Jacob Johnson: The Lewisville-Funded Artist Behind Songs Without Words. He Is Talking at the Grand This Saturday.

If you have walked through the Lewisville Grand Theater's art gallery lately, you have seen the work of Jacob Johnson. His solo exhibition Songs Without Words runs through August 15 and it is one of the more genuinely surprising shows to come through the Grand in recent memory. This Saturday July 25 at 1 PM, Johnson will be there in person for a free artist talk, and it is worth showing up for.

Johnson is a DFW-based classical guitarist and photographer who has spent years capturing the backstage world of live music in black and white. His images focus on the charged moments just before a performance, instruments resting against chairs, a musician's hands testing the strings, shadows falling across the stage in the dark before the house lights drop. The photographs are not meant to document celebrities so much as the atmosphere and the suspended silence before sound begins.

Songs Without Words is a multidisciplinary project that earned Johnson grants from both the Greater Denton Arts Council and the City of Lewisville Artist Microgrant program. Those funds supported not just the exhibition at the Grand but also a companion photobook and a new EP for classical guitar, three interlocking pieces that explore how music can be experienced visually, even in silence. Fort Worth Magazine covered the project and called it rich with music you can almost hear.

The artist talk on Saturday July 25 runs from 1 PM to 3 PM at the Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street. It is free and open to the public. No reservation needed.
