Want to See How Lewisville Police Really Work? The Citizen Police Academy Is Now Taking Applications.

If you have ever wondered what police officers actually deal with day to day, the Lewisville Police Department is giving residents the chance to find out firsthand. The LPD is now taking applications for its fall 2026 Citizen Police Academy session, a free 10-week program that gives residents an inside look at how the department operates.

The program runs on Thursday evenings and covers a wide range of topics and demonstrations that go well beyond what most people know about local law enforcement. Participants get access to the jail and communications center, watch K9 and SWAT team demonstrations, go through crime scene investigation exercises, attend CPR and basic first aid training, and have direct time with officers to ask questions and share concerns. The academy's motto is Understanding Through Education, and that spirit runs through every session.

To be eligible you need to be at least 18 years old and live or work in the City of Lewisville. A standard background check is required. Class size is limited so applying early is recommended. Past classes have filled quickly and the department has run the program for decades because demand from residents consistently stays high.

Graduates of the Citizen Police Academy have the opportunity to join the Lewisville Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association and, if interested, volunteer with the Citizens on Patrol program, which gives alumni the chance to serve as additional eyes and ears alongside LPD in the community.

Lewisville Wants to Hear From You Before Spending Federal Housing Funds

The City of Lewisville is asking residents to weigh in on how federal housing and community development funds should be spent in the year ahead. The city is currently soliciting public comments on its Annual Action Plan, which governs how it applies Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership Program funds received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

These are real federal dollars that go directly into Lewisville neighborhoods. In past years CDBG funds have supported projects like the Boys and Girls Clubs HVAC replacement, the Denton County Friends of the Family Justice Center, the Historical Fox Hembry Cemetery Restoration, and United Way of Denton County programs. The purpose of the CDBG program is specifically to provide decent housing, create a suitable living environment, and expand economic opportunities for low to moderate income Lewisville residents.

The public comment period is open now and this is a genuine opportunity for residents to shape how those resources are directed. Comments can be submitted through the city's website or in person at a public meeting. If there is a program, neighborhood need, or community organization you believe should be considered for funding, this is the process through which that input can officially be heard.

Meet Kevin. He Is at Gene Carey Shelter and Looking for His Forever Home.

This week's featured pet at Gene Carey Animal Shelter is Kevin. Every week the City of Lewisville spotlights one animal at the shelter who is ready to go home, and this week that animal is Kevin.

Kevin is available for adoption right now at Gene Carey Animal Shelter and Adoption Center at 995 E. Valley Ridge Boulevard. Like all animals at the shelter, Kevin has been vaccinated, wormed, microchipped, and treated for fleas. The adoption process is straightforward: visit cityoflewisville.com and click Adoptable Pets to see Kevin's full profile and photos, then submit an online application. Shelter staff will contact you the next business day. Animals are adopted on a first come first served basis so applying sooner is always better.

Library Destination Summer Ends August 1. Two Weeks Left to Claim Your Free Book.

August 1 is two weeks from Saturday and that is the last day to turn in your summer reading log at the Lewisville Public Library. If your kids have been reading but have not yet submitted their log, now is the time to make it count.

The Destination Summer challenge is free and open to all ages. Read 25 books, 25 hours, or 25 days over the summer, turn in your log by August 1, and earn a free book plus entries into prize drawings. Kids, teens, and adults all have their own separate prize pools.

The library's summer program schedule continues through August with weekly events still on the calendar. Elementary Explorations meets Thursdays at 3:30 PM with hands-on themed activities for younger kids. The Hive makerspace runs adult classes in creative skills and crafts throughout the week. Monthly book clubs for adults run year-round and are a great way to connect with other readers in Lewisville.
