Katherine Rice bakes out of Lela Scratch Bakery, a Lewisville cottage bakery built around small-batch granolas, cookies, pastries, and biscuits, plus custom cookie and pastry boxes for events, gifting, and anything worth celebrating. What sets her apart is what's not in the recipes: no refined white sugar, anywhere. Instead you'll find honey, maple syrup, turbinado sugar, and coconut sugar doing the work, alongside 100% whole grain flours — including a specially-milled whole wheat flour from a family farm in Montana. It's a small detail that makes a real difference in both texture and flavor.

Since it's a cottage bakery, there's no storefront to walk into, but the weekly Saturday morning drops are where the magic happens (order online), and Katherine's been popping up at markets around DFW too, those are posted on Instagram as they're announced. Mark your calendar for a few: she'll have a pop-up at Coffee Cove in Las Colinas on September 12, a booth at Oktoberfest at The Star on October 3, and another at the Flower Mound Smoke and Whiskey Festival on October 31.

Lewisville's Parks and Recreation Department is wrapping up its public input window for a new trail planned through Castle Hills, with two final meetings on the calendar before the design gets locked in. The city hired the firm McAdams for surveying and landscape architecture, building the schematic around guidelines in the city's Healthy Infrastructure Plan and the 2024 bond package.

The first phase calls for a 12-foot-wide trail along the southernmost stretch of the corridor, running from Windhaven Parkway east to a utility easement and then north to the sports fields, with wayfinding signage, a trailhead and shaded rest spots planned along the way. The long-term vision ties Castle Hills into the trail networks already built out in Carrollton, Plano and The Colony, plus Lewisville's own Green Centerpiece.

Residents who live in or near Castle Hills and haven't weighed in yet have two more chances this week, one Saturday morning and one Tuesday evening, before the project moves toward a finished design.

Lewisville ISD's free and reduced-price lunch program is open for the 2026-27 school year, and the district is reminding families they can apply at any point during the year, not just at the start. "This program is an important way to support families and ensure kids stay nourished and ready to learn," said Cristina Tapia with LISD Child Nutrition.

An adult in the household fills out an application listing everyone who lives there, the income for each household member, and the last four digits of the signer's Social Security number, or a note that they don't have one. Applications can be submitted online or picked up and turned in at the district's Child Nutrition Department, 1565 W. Main St., Building B.

The district is also cross-checking with local agencies to identify households that already qualify automatically, so some families won't need to apply at all. If a household's size or income changes during the year, LISD says submitting a new application could open up new eligibility.

Lewisville Public Library is joining libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month this September, encouraging residents, especially parents and students, to pick up a free library card now that the school year is in full swing.

A Lewisville library card unlocks more than book checkouts. Cardholders get free access to Family Story Times, STEAM programs and educational apps, plus The Hive, the library's in-house makerspace stocked with 3D printers, laser cutters, a CNC milling machine, sewing and embroidery machines, and a Digital Media Lab.

With back-to-school costs adding up, library staff point out a card is one of the most cost-effective supplies a family can pick up all year, and it doesn't cost a thing.

Our Productions Theatre Co. opens its beginner and intermediate music theater classes for kids and teens this Saturday at the Lewisville Grand Theater, giving young performers an ongoing, structured option beyond the company's summer camps and one-off workshops.

The classes run through the Young Artist Training Program, which offers open-enrollment sessions for grades 3 through 6 and 7 through 10, plus more advanced training tracks for older students. Organizers say tuition assistance is available so cost doesn't keep an interested kid out of the room.

Classes meet inside the Grand, giving young performers a chance to train in the same building where Lewisville's community theater and touring shows take the stage.

Lewisville's first traffic signal went up in 1942 at the intersection of Main and Mill streets. For years the light was operated by hand, switched on each morning around 8 AM and off again around 8 PM by an employee of Huffines Motor Company.

Sliding to 90.1% full as of Thursday, August 27, the most recent reading from Water Data for Texas, down from 90.5% earlier in the week and continuing a steady slide from 91.9% just a week ago. That puts the lake a little over two feet below full pool (522 ft), still well within the normal range for late summer. No advisories are in effect, so boat ramps, swim areas and the Party Cove remain business as usual heading into the weekend.
