Lewisville Has a Shelter Full of Pets Ready to Go Home. Here Is How to Adopt One.

Lewisville's Gene Carey Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is one of the better-run municipal shelters in North Texas, and right now it has dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes. If you or someone you know has been thinking about adding a pet to the family, summer is one of the best times to do it and the shelter makes the process straightforward.

The city features a Pet of the Week each week to spotlight one animal in particular, but the full roster of available animals is always worth a browse. Every pet at the shelter has been vaccinated, wormed, microchipped, and treated for fleas before going home. Most dogs and cats are spayed or neutered. The shelter covers heartworm treatment for animals that test positive, so a positive result is not a reason to pass on an otherwise great dog.

The adoption process is simple. Visit cityoflewisville.com and click on Adoptable Pets to see every animal currently available with photos and individual profiles. When you find one you want to meet, click through to the listing and submit an online application. Shelter staff will contact you the next business day to confirm eligibility and schedule a visit. Animals are adopted on a first come first served basis, so applying sooner is always better.

If you prefer to visit in person before applying, the shelter is located at 995 E. Valley Ridge Boulevard in Lewisville and welcomes walk-in visits during business hours. Songs Without Words Opens Sunday at LLELA. Here Is Why You Should Go.

This Sunday evening, one of Lewisville's most extraordinary natural spaces becomes an arts venue. Songs Without Words opens at the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area on Sunday July 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at 201 E. Jones Street. The event is free and no ticket is required.

LLELA covers more than 2,600 acres of prairies, bottomland hardwood forests, wetlands, and cross timbers habitat at the base of Lewisville Dam. The Trinity River runs through it. More than 270 bird species have been recorded there. On most evenings at this time of year, the light across the water and tree line is genuinely stunning. Using that setting for a live arts event and opening reception is the kind of thing that makes for a memorable summer evening close to home.

This is also not the only reason to head to LLELA this Sunday. The Third Sunday Nature Talk runs the same morning from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at the same address, making a full day there a real option for families who love the outdoors and want to explore one of the most underappreciated natural assets in Lewisville before the evening program begins.

Tuesday Is the Last Sounds of Lewisville Concert of the Season. Do Not Miss It.

Since 1991, the Sounds of Lewisville free concert series has been one of the most beloved summer traditions in the city. This Tuesday July 21 at Wayne Ferguson Plaza is the final concert of the 2026 season, and it is free.

The format is the same as every Tuesday night throughout the summer: doors open at 7:00 PM with an opening act performing from 7:00 to 7:45 PM, followed by the headliner from 8:00 to 9:30 PM. Bring blankets and lawn chairs. Well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome. Food and beverages are available for purchase on site. Wayne Ferguson Plaza is located in Old Town Lewisville on Charles Street, with free parking along Main and Charles streets and at Lewisville City Hall.

This season brought ten shows across May, June, and July including tribute acts for Taylor Swift, U2, Earth Wind and Fire, the Beach Boys, and the bonus Juneteenth concert on June 19. Tuesday's final show closes out a run that has drawn thousands of Lewisville residents to Old Town all summer long. LISD Back to School Is 26 Days Away. Here Is What to Do This Week.

August 12 is coming faster than it feels. With less than four weeks until Lewisville ISD's first day of school, this weekend is a good time to check a few important boxes if you have children in the district.

New student enrollment is open right now at lisd.net/enroll using the district's upgraded Qmlativ system, which replaced Skyward this summer. If you have a student who has never enrolled in LISD before, the time to do it is now rather than in the final week of July when staff capacity gets stretched. Returning students already enrolled for 2025-26 do not need to take any action.

New school hours take effect this fall and they are different from last year. Elementary schools run 7:40 AM to 3:05 PM. Middle schools run 8:15 AM to 3:40 PM. High schools run 8:50 AM to 4:15 PM. If you have been used to previous pickup and dropoff times, take note of these changes now so you can adjust your work and childcare schedules with enough lead time.

The Library Destination Summer reading challenge ends August 1, which is two weeks away. If your kids have been reading this summer and have not yet turned in their log, remind them the deadline is coming and the free book reward is waiting. Full program details at library.cityoflewisville.com.
