Lewisville Just Won the North Texas Community Cleanup Challenge. Out of 29 Cities

Lewisville has something to celebrate this week. The city has been named the overall champion of the 2026 North Texas Community Cleanup Challenge, beating out 28 other participating cities in a regionwide competition to see which community could collect the most litter ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

This year's challenge drew more participation than any previous year. Across the 29 competing cities, a total of 153,690 pounds of litter were collected between March and May 2026 — more than double the amount gathered in any prior year. The competition is organized by the North Central Texas Council of Governments, and Lewisville came out on top of the overall rankings, earning the traveling trophy that will now be displayed at Lewisville City Hall.

Frisco took home the Mayor's Challenge, a companion competition that invites elected officials to personally champion their city's cleanup efforts. Together, Lewisville and Frisco led a regional effort that made North Texas noticeably cleaner for tens of thousands of World Cup visitors this summer.

The cleanup was organized locally through Keep Lewisville Beautiful, a city program that partners with volunteers, neighborhood groups, schools, and businesses on litter removal and environmental stewardship throughout the year. Residents who participated in any spring cleanup events helped earn this recognition for the entire community.

West Nile Alert: Mosquito Spraying Starts Tonight in Lewisville. What You Need to Know

Lewisville residents in part of the city should be aware of outdoor spraying happening tonight and tomorrow night. Vector Disease Control International, the private company contracted by the City of Lewisville for mosquito surveillance, has confirmed the city's second positive West Nile Virus mosquito trap for 2026. The positive sample came from a trap collected in the 900 block of Rachel's Court.

In response, ground spraying will occur in a half-mile radius of that testing location. Weather permitting, spraying is scheduled for tonight Tuesday July 14 and tomorrow Wednesday July 15, both beginning at 9 PM. The spraying is conducted by trucks operated by Vector Disease Control International. The insecticide used is registered with the EPA and city officials say it poses minimal risk to humans and the environment.

If you live near the Rachel's Court area or want to take extra precautions regardless of location, a few simple steps make a real difference. Avoid being outside between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Wear long sleeves and pants if you are outside in the evening. Use EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. And eliminate any standing water on your property, even small amounts in plant saucers, gutters, or buckets, since that is where mosquitoes breed.

The City of Lewisville offers free mosquito dunks to residents as a practical prevention tool. Dunks are available for pickup in person at Lewisville City Hall, Permitting Counter on the second floor, 151 W. Church Street. City Hall hours are Monday through Thursday 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Friday 7:30 to 11:30 AM. Proof of residency is required.

Volunteer Opportunity This Saturday: Help Clean Up Lake Park Disc Golf Course

If you are looking for a way to give back to Lewisville this weekend, Service Saturday has you covered. This Saturday July 18, from 8 AM to 10 AM, the City of Lewisville Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a volunteer cleanup event at Lake Park focused on the disc golf course area.

Service Saturday events bring community members together to care for Lewisville's parks, trails, and green spaces throughout the year. Projects vary by event and may include cleanup, light maintenance, planting, and beautification work. The event is open to volunteers of all ages and all necessary supplies are provided on site.

Songs Without Words Opens Sunday Evening at LLELA. Free and Open to All

This Sunday evening, the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area becomes the setting for something a little unexpected. Songs Without Words is an opening reception and performance taking place at LLELA from 6 PM to 8 PM on July 19, combining the natural landscape of the area with a live arts experience that is free and open to the public.

LLELA at 201 E. Jones Street covers more than 2,600 acres of prairies, bottomland forests, wetlands, and cross timbers habitat at the base of Lewisville Dam. Using it as a venue for an evening arts event makes for a setting you simply cannot replicate indoors. The event is free and runs alongside the Third Sunday Nature Talk that same morning from 9 AM to 11 AM for those who want to make a full day of it.
