Lewisville Just Funded a Trail Extension That Could One Day Reach Dallas

Lewisville took a significant step toward one of North Texas's most ambitious trail projects at its July 6 City Council meeting, approving a $2.2 million construction contract with Garrett Shields Infrastructure to extend the DCTA A-Train Rail Trail southwest toward Carrollton and Coppell.

The existing DCTA A-Train Rail Trail is a 19-mile paved path that runs parallel to the A-train commuter rail line from Downtown Denton to the Hebron Station in Lewisville, passing through Highland Village and connecting all five A-train stations. The newly approved contract funds the first segment of an extension that heads in a new direction, pushing the trail southwest from Lewisville toward Carrollton and Coppell for the first time.

This first segment is part of a much larger regional vision. The full Denton to Dallas Regional Trail, planned by the North Central Texas Council of Governments in partnership with Lewisville, Carrollton, Coppell, Dallas, DCTA and DART, envisions a connected trail corridor stretching approximately 52 miles from Downtown Denton to Downtown Dallas. Of that total, about 41 miles already exist, 6 miles are funded for construction including this new Lewisville segment, and 5 miles still need funding. When fully built, the trail would give cyclists and pedestrians a continuous off-road route connecting Denton County to the heart of Dallas.

For Lewisville residents who already use the A-Train Rail Trail for commuting, exercise, or recreation, this extension eventually means the ability to ride or walk south into Carrollton, connect to DART Silver Line rail access, and continue into the broader DFW trail network. It is the kind of investment that pays dividends in quality of life, property values, and connectivity for decades.

Two LISD Alumni Get Drafted by MLB Teams in the Same Weekend

Lewisville ISD had a big weekend in professional baseball. Two alumni were selected during the first day of the 2026 MLB Draft on July 11, with a Marcus High School graduate heading to the Chicago Cubs and a Flower Mound High School graduate heading to the Washington Nationals.

Marcus alum Caden Sorrell was taken with the 62nd overall pick in the second round by the Chicago Cubs. Sorrell played his high school baseball at Marcus in Flower Mound before heading to Texas A&M, where he became one of the Aggies' most productive hitters in recent memory. In his junior season, he slashed .341 with 23 home runs, 76 RBIs, and a 1.094 career OPS over three seasons. He is a big left-handed outfielder with plus power and speed, and MLB Pipeline ranked him as the 32nd-best prospect in the entire draft. The Cubs have one of the more exciting young outfields in baseball, and Sorrell adds another powerful bat to their pipeline.

Flower Mound High School pitcher Cooper Harris was taken 44 picks later at No. 106 overall in the fourth round by the Washington Nationals. Harris wrapped up a standout senior season that included some of the best pitching numbers in the state, posting a 0.34 ERA and an 8-2 record while helping lead Flower Mound to the regional semifinals. He was named a Baseball America high school All-American and was tabbed the District 5-6A and Star Local Media all-area pitcher of the year. Harris had committed to the University of Texas before opting to sign with Washington.

Together they represent a strong MLB Draft showing for Lewisville ISD, with two different campuses producing professional prospects in the same week. A $52.7M Deal Will Renovate Stone Creek Apartments in Lewisville

Atlantic Housing Foundation, a Dallas-based nonprofit focused on affordable housing, has closed a $52.7 million deal to acquire and renovate Stone Creek Apartments at 328 E. Southwest Parkway in Lewisville. The transaction represents one of the largest affordable housing preservation investments in the city in recent years.

Stone Creek is a 328-unit apartment community situated near I-35E, Central Park, and Old Town Lewisville, offering one and two-bedroom layouts. The property has operated as an affordable housing community and is home to hundreds of Lewisville residents. The $52.7 million deal funds the acquisition of the property along with a comprehensive renovation plan that includes upgraded individual units and refreshed community amenities throughout the complex.

Atlantic Housing Foundation, founded in 1999, is a nonprofit organization with a mission to develop and preserve quality affordable housing for low and moderate-income families. The organization has invested more than $5 million in scholarships for residents from disadvantaged backgrounds since 2006 and provides resident services designed to improve quality of life and promote personal advancement alongside housing stability. Stone Creek residents can expect to see improvements to their homes while remaining in their community under the nonprofit's ownership model.

Preserving affordable housing stock is increasingly critical in a North Texas market where rental prices have risen significantly. Free World-Class Art Exhibit Opens This Friday at Lewisville Grand

This Friday July 18, the Lewisville Grand Theater's art gallery opens its next solo exhibition and it is worth putting on your calendar. Marilyn Henrion: The Ninth Decade runs through August 15 and admission is completely free.

Henrion is a New York-based textile artist whose work has been shown in galleries and museums internationally. The exhibition draws together pieces created over a decade-long period of her career, exploring themes of time, memory, and identity through intricate fabric compositions. Her work sits at the intersection of fine art and craft in a way that consistently surprises first-time viewers. This is not a conventional art show and the subject matter gives it an emotional depth that goes beyond decoration.
