Lewisville PD Launches Drones That Beat Police Cars to 911 Calls

The Lewisville Police Department just launched one of the most advanced public safety programs in North Texas. The new Drone First Responder program deploys drones to 911 calls from three fixed launch points across the city, often arriving on scene before the first patrol car gets there.

The drones launch from climate-controlled docks and are integrated with the dispatch system, meaning they can be in the air within moments of a call coming in. Each drone is equipped with thermal cameras, spotlights, and speakers, giving officers a real-time aerial view of any situation day or night and the ability to communicate with people at a scene from a distance. They fly at up to 45 mph and can capture clear footage from 400 feet away.

The department received FAA authorization for Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations, meaning operators can respond remotely from a centralized location without physically driving a pilot to each scene. Drone Unit Sgt. Timothy O'Hare describes the program as a force multiplier for officers, providing critical information in high-stress situations that helps them assess threats, coordinate responses, and make faster, better-informed decisions.

For residents who have questions about privacy, Police Chief Brook Rollins addressed it directly at the program's launch. The department has published its full drone policy online and built a live public transparency dashboard where anyone can watch drone flight activity in real time. Lewisville has been building toward this program since 2020, starting with two drones and five pilots before reaching today's fully operational launch with three permanent dock locations across the city.

A $74.6 Million Data Center for Wells Fargo Breaks Ground in Lewisville This Month

A major technology investment is underway in Lewisville. Digital Realty, one of the world's largest data center companies, has filed plans for a $74.6 million interior buildout at its Lewisville campus for Wells Fargo. Construction is expected to begin this month with completion targeted for summer 2027.

Digital Realty has operated the Convergence Business Park on Edmonds Lane in Lewisville since 2012, when it acquired the 831,400-square-foot campus that was originally built as a Texas Instruments plant. That campus has been a significant technology infrastructure anchor for the city for over a decade. The new buildout adds a dedicated data hall fitted out specifically for Wells Fargo's banking infrastructure needs.

Lewisville ISD Teacher Named 2026 Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year

Lewisville ISD has a statewide Teacher of the Year. Timothy Fails, a geography teacher at Flower Mound 9th Grade Campus, has been named the 2026 Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Texas Association of School Administrators. He is the third LISD teacher to receive this recognition since 1997.

Fails has spent 18 years in the classroom and has been part of Flower Mound 9th Grade Campus since the day it opened in 2014, serving as Social Studies Department Chair throughout. A first-generation college graduate with a degree from the University of North Texas, his path to this honor started with being named LISD Secondary Teacher of the Year, then Region 11 Secondary Teacher of the Year representing 76 districts, before being selected as one of just three secondary finalists statewide and ultimately named the winner.

What sets Fails apart is his belief that geography is about understanding the relationship between people and the planet, and that his classroom is a space to shrink the world for 90 minutes a day. His students build global perspective and critical thinking skills that carry far beyond the subject matter. Outside the classroom, he has coached tennis, advised student council, and formed lasting connections with students and families across his career.
