Thrive Closes for Its Annual Maintenance Week Starting Today
Lewisville's multigenerational recreation center, Thrive, shuts its doors today for a week of annual maintenance and deep cleaning meant to keep the building in top shape for the members who use it daily.
The closure runs through Sunday, Aug. 23, with Thrive scheduled to reopen Monday, Aug. 24, at 5 AM. Members who do not want to skip a week of movement have an alternative: the city is hosting free fitness classes at Wayne Ferguson Plaza in Old Town Lewisville throughout the closure, including a Power Hour session, a yoga class, a bodyweight strength workout and a Tai Chi session.

Lewisville PD Opens Its Doors for a Public Open House Sept. 1

Lewisville Police Department is inviting residents to tour its home base, the Tittle McFadden Public Safety Center, during a come-and-go Open House on Tuesday, Sept. 1, from 5 to 8:30 PM.
The event includes short tours of the 116,000-square-foot facility, a look at SWAT equipment, a Drone Team demonstration and a K9 unit showcase. Police Chief Brook Rollins will deliver a welcome address at 5:30 PM in the training room.
The Public Safety Center houses LPD and Lewisville Fire Department administration, Fire Station #1, and the city's Office of Emergency Management, along with a hardened emergency operations center.

"Clear the Shelters" Drops Adoption Fees to $60 This Week
Lewisville Animal Services has joined NBCUniversal Local's Clear the Shelters campaign, now in its 12th year, with a month of discounted adoption fees running through Aug. 31 at the Gene Carey Animal Shelter and Adoption Center.
This week, Sunday, Aug. 16 through Saturday, Aug. 22, the fee for any available pet drops to $60, down from the standard $90. The discount deepens to $30 per pet the following week, Aug. 23-28, and on Saturday, Aug. 29, every adoption fee is waived entirely.
The shelter, located at 995 E. Valley Ridge Dr., is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Saturday from noon to 5 PM. Monday is appointment-only and it is closed Sundays. Animals are adopted on a first-come, first-served basis, and the shelter's full list of adoptable pets is available online. Since 2015, the national campaign has helped place more than 1.3 million pets in homes.

LISD Wraps Its First Week Under a New Bell Schedule
Lewisville ISD students just finished their first full week under a reshuffled school day. When classes opened Aug. 12, the district's board-approved changes took effect districtwide: middle and high school start times swapped, and every campus added ten minutes to the school day.
The swap means middle schoolers now report earlier than they used to, while high schoolers get a slightly later start. The district says the extra ten minutes district-wide is meant to give teachers more planning time built into each day.
The year also marks the launch of LISD Everywhere, a new hybrid and fully virtual learning option for students whose circumstances make a traditional five-day campus schedule difficult. Families still weighing options are encouraged to contact their home campus directly.

Lewisville Lake has seen far more dramatic swings than this week's numbers suggest. In May 2015, the rainiest month in recorded Texas history sent rivers and lakes surging statewide, and Lewisville Lake crested at a record elevation of 537.02 feet, roughly 15 feet above its normal full pool of 522 feet.
