The City Shelter Is Opening at Noon Now, and Owner Surrenders Are on Hold
Lewisville Animal Services changed its schedule on Friday, September 11, and the shelter now opens at noon Tuesday through Friday instead of 10 AM. The reason is staffing. The department is working through several open positions, and the later opening buys the remaining staff a full morning for feeding, cleaning and medical care before the public comes through the door.
The bigger change for residents is on the intake side. New non-urgent owner surrender appointments are paused through October. Appointments already on the calendar will be honored, and urgent situations are still being evaluated one at a time rather than turned away by default. Emergency and public safety calls remain the department's first priority through all of it.
If you were planning to surrender a pet, this is a call-first situation rather than a show-up situation. Animal Services answers at 972.219.3478 or [email protected], and that is also the line to use if you already have an appointment and want to confirm it still stands. The city says normal hours and normal intake return as the open positions get filled.
Adoptions are not part of the pause. Adoptable animals are still listed on the city's Adoptable Pets page, and with the shelter running short-handed, adopting or fostering is one of the more direct ways to take pressure off the building right now.

Tonight the Council Takes Public Comment on the Budget Behind Your Tax Bill
The public hearing on Lewisville's proposed Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget is tonight, Monday, September 14, in the Council Chambers at City Hall. This is the meeting where residents hold the microphone on a $148 million proposed General Fund budget, a property tax rate moving from .419009 to .436381 per $100 of valuation, and a 7.8 percent utility rate increase.
Council opens with a workshop at 6:30 PM and moves into the regular session at 7 PM, at 151 W. Church Street. A second hearing, this one specifically on setting the property tax rate, follows next Monday, September 21, in the same room.
If you want to read before you speak, the proposed budget is posted on the city's Annual Budget page, with print copies at the City Secretary's Office and the Lewisville Public Library during regular hours. One piece of context the city offers alongside the increase: even at the proposed rate, Lewisville's property tax rate stays among the lowest in North Texas.

Old Town Has Four Free Workout Classes a Week, and Tonight's Is the Hard One
Wayne Ferguson Plaza runs four free exercise classes every week with no reservations and no cap on class size, and the Monday session starts at 6:15 PM tonight. Monday Power Hour is the high-intensity one, a fast hour of HIIT built around total body movements, functional training and explosive intervals. All fitness levels are welcome, which in practice means you scale it to whatever you can actually do.
The rest of the week is gentler. Blue Anjou Yoga Studios leads a one-hour class Wednesdays at 6 PM, open to every level, bring your own mat or a blanket and towel plus water. Case Cortez runs a 45-minute bodyweight strength class Thursdays at 6:15 PM, no weights required, mat and towel and water again. Tai Chi lands Saturdays at 9:30 AM and works through the 16-movement form for an hour, all slow and flowing, no special gear beyond loose clothes and flat-soled shoes.
The classes exist partly to keep the Plaza in use as an everyday public space instead of only a festival venue, which is one of the Old Town priorities in the Lewisville 2025 plan. The practical version is simpler. It is a free outdoor gym in the middle of Old Town four days a week, and outdoor is finally starting to sound appealing again.

The City Is Looking for Homeowners Who Need a Hand, Not Just Volunteers
For the Love of Lewisville, the city's fall day of service, lands Saturday, October 24, and the call going out right now runs in two directions. The city needs volunteers, which is the half most people hear about. It also needs residents who genuinely need help rehabbing their home to raise a hand and say so.
That second half is the easy one to miss. The whole day is built around fixing real things at real addresses, and the project list only exists because people ask to be on it. If the yard has gotten away from you, if there is trim that needs paint or hedges nobody has touched in a couple of seasons, that is a reasonable reason to get in touch rather than assume someone else needs it more.
On the volunteer side the work ranges from raking leaves and trimming trees or hedges to painting, mowing, washing windows, cleaning, sweeping and hauling debris, plus park cleanup. Groups, families, individuals and skilled tradespeople are all welcome. Sign-ups go through volunteer.cityoflewisville.com. The day starts early, with everyone gathering at 6:30 AM at Bill Weaver Arena, 101 Parkway Drive.

🕰️ Trivia Day in Lewisville
Vista Ridge Mall opened on October 4, 1989, with Sears and Dillard's as its first two anchor stores. Game show host Bob Eubanks cut the ribbon at the center court ceremony that morning, which tells you roughly how big a deal a new enclosed mall was in Lewisville at the time.
The building is still there at Round Grove Road and I-35E, but the sign out front has changed twice. New ownership renamed it Music City Mall in 2017, and today it goes by The Vista. Same roof, same terrazzo, three different names on the same set of Lewisville memories.

🌊 Lake Lewisville Check
Lewisville Lake was 86.2% full as of the September 13 reading from Water Data for Texas, the most recent daily figure before this issue went out. Average water level was 519.01 feet, right about three feet below the 522-foot conservation pool that counts as a full lake.
The slide is slow rather than dramatic. The lake read 86.3% yesterday, 87.7% a week ago and 93.8% a month ago, which is the ordinary late summer pattern of evaporation and downstream releases outrunning rainfall. On this date last year it sat at 93.9%, so the lake is running about seven and a half points behind September 2025.
No lake advisories are posted. At three feet down the main boat ramps and swim areas including Party Cove are still in normal use, but the shoreline keeps stepping outward, so give sandbars and submerged stumps a wider berth than you would in spring.
