Lewisville ISD students return to class today, Wednesday, August 12, opening the 2026-27 school year with new bell times across every campus: elementary at 7:40 AM, middle school at 8:15 AM and high school at 8:50 AM.
One campus reopens under a new name this year. The building that once housed Mill Street Elementary is now the Vernell Gregg Early Childhood Center, honoring the first African American member of the LISD Board of Trustees. Trustees approved the renaming in June, closing out a repurposing effort that began after Mill Street's students were reassigned to other campuses due to the building's accountability ratings.
Gregg spent 39 years as an educator, 25 of them with LISD, and helped launch programs including the district's AVID college-readiness track and the Annual MLK Day Art Contests at Degan Elementary, now in their 33rd year. Community members and elected officials gathered for the announcement in June, and district leaders say the naming reflects decades of advocacy for Lewisville students and families.

Denton County's First Boys & Girls Club Nears an August Opening

A shuttered Lewisville fire station is on track to become Denton County's first brick-and-mortar Boys & Girls Club, with organizers targeting an opening this month.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tarrant County broke ground this spring on the 8,000-square-foot renovation at 195 W. Corporate Drive, after the city of Lewisville donated the former fire station for the project. The RAO Foundation kicked in a $1 million lead gift and challenged the community to match it, while Denton County has pledged $3 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding toward the club's growth.
Once open, organizers expect the club to serve thousands of local kids and teens each year with mentorship, meals and after-school programming. It will be the organization's first standalone facility in Denton County.

LISD Approves $321K in Targeted Pay Raises for Teachers and Staff
Heading into the new school year, Lewisville ISD trustees have signed off on a $321,000 package of targeted salary adjustments for 2026-27, aimed at keeping the district competitive for hard-to-fill positions.
The plan layers market-based raises for principals and specialized staff on top of more than $4 million in structured raises already approved earlier this year for teachers and district-funded non-instructional employees, plus new or expanded stipends for special education, bilingual and other high-need roles.
District leaders have framed the adjustments as a retention play, an effort to keep experienced staff from being pulled away by neighboring districts as the new year begins.

Lewisville Expands DCTA Trail Toward Carrollton and Coppell

Lewisville has approved a $2.2 million contract to extend the DCTA A-train Rail Trail, a first concrete step toward linking the city's hike-and-bike network with Carrollton and Coppell.
The extension builds on the roughly 19-mile A-train Rail Trail that already connects Downtown Denton to the Hebron station in Lewisville, and it's part of the broader vision for a 52-mile Denton-to-Dallas Regional Trail. Of that full corridor, about 41 miles already exist, with this contract funding the next stretch.
City officials point to the extension as years of regional planning taking shape, aimed at giving residents car-free routes between Denton County cities. The project remains in the construction pipeline, with completion tied to the broader multi-year rollout.

Lewisville has its own brush with one of the most notorious crime outfits in American history. In 1934, members of the Barrow Gang, the outfit associated with Bonnie and Clyde, robbed the First National Bank of Lewisville. Bonnie and Clyde themselves had passed through town earlier that year, but neither was present for the robbery itself.

That keeps Lewisville Lake a bit under full pool (522 ft) but comfortably within the normal range for mid-August.
