Lewisville City Council heard public pushback Wednesday over the concrete traffic-calming blocks recently installed on King Arthur Boulevard in the Castle Hills neighborhood, with several residents questioning whether the roughly $1 million project has done more harm than good.

The blocks went in after residents raised concerns about speeding on the narrow, two-way street. But opponents like resident Kristy Slaten say the lane collects debris, gets hit and chipped by passing drivers, and isn't even used by the cyclists it was partly meant to help. She's asking the city for a clear plan to maintain the blocks going forward. Other residents at the meeting were more accepting of the change, saying it's already installed and doesn't bother them.

City leaders didn't take a vote at Wednesday's meeting, and it's unclear when, or whether, the blocks might be adjusted. We'll follow up if the city announces next steps.

The National Weather Service has an excessive heat warning in effect for Denton County and much of North Texas through Friday evening, with heat index values climbing well into the triple digits during the hottest stretch of the afternoon.

Meteorologists say the risk of heat-related illness is significantly elevated during the warning period, with Friday's high expected in the upper 90s and humidity pushing the "feels like" temperature into the low 100s. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity between 2 and 7 PM, the hottest part of the day, drink water regularly even without feeling thirsty, never leave kids or pets in a parked car, and check on elderly neighbors or anyone without reliable air conditioning.

Lewisville Public Library, 1197 W. Main St., is open with air conditioning through the evening for anyone looking for a cool place to wait out the heat.

Lewisville Grand Theater's art gallery turns over to two new shows this weekend, "Fresh Ideas 2026" and "Tears to Glory," both opening Saturday alongside a public reception that evening.

The new exhibitions replace "Songs Without Words," "Small Works" and the Marilyn Henrion retrospective, all of which wrapped up their runs earlier this month. "She Found Her Way," a separate exhibition, continues to run alongside the new shows.

The gallery is free and open to the public during regular hours, and Saturday's opening reception gives visitors a chance to see the new work up close.

A new family entertainment venue is taking shape at 715 Hebron Pkwy., where Lava Island is building out its second Texas location, a tropical-themed indoor playground the company bills as fun for all ages, not just kids.

The concept, which already has locations open across Colorado, Missouri, Arizona, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Georgia, Connecticut and elsewhere, packs climbing structures, slides, foam pits and themed play rooms under one roof, along with a food and drink menu and a birthday party program. A second North Texas location is also planned for Plano.

Lava Island hasn't announced a firm opening date yet, targeting fall 2026, but is inviting families to sign up on its website for construction updates and early access to birthday party bookings once the doors open.

Easing to 92.2% full as of Wednesday, August 19, the latest reading from Water Data for Texas, down slightly from the 92.5% mark reported Tuesday. That keeps Lewisville Lake a bit under full pool (522 ft) but well within the normal range for late summer. No advisories are in effect, so boat ramps, swim areas and the Party Cove remain business as usual.
