The City of Lewisville confirmed this week that the Let's Get Western Bull Bash and Fiesta Charra are back on the calendar for Labor Day weekend, after heavy rain forced organizers to postpone both events back in May.

Let's Get Western Bull Bash returns Saturday, September 5, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, presented by the City of Lewisville and Vanguard GMC of Carrollton. The night features the Elite Pro Bull Riders Team Series in the Young Guns and Legends divisions, inflatables for kids, food and drink concessions, and live music from Big City Outlaws between rounds.

The next day, Fiesta Charra takes over the arena Sunday, September 6, from 4 to 10:30 PM. The free, family friendly event recreates a traditional charreada, Mexico's rodeo tradition, with Ballet Folklorico performances, escaramuza charra (a synchronized horse skirmish), pony rides, lucha libre wrestling and a jalapeno eating contest, plus live music from Sol De La Kumbia, Andrea "Gotita" and Quimikoz Del Son.

Parking at the arena is limited and costs $10 cash. Overflow parking is available at North Point Church and Lewisville City Hall, with a free shuttle running 3 to 11 PM from the City Hall east lot.

City Manager Claire Powell announced this week that Aaron Russell and Tadd Phillips have been promoted to Assistant City Manager, rounding out a reorganization of the city's executive team following the January retirement of former Assistant City Manager Jim Proce and the planned January 2027 retirement of Deputy City Manager Gina McGrath.

Russell, who has served as Director of Public Works since 2023, will now oversee Engineering, Planning, Public Works and Parks and Recreation. He brings more than 20 years of city government experience, including stops in Weatherford, Burleson, Addison, Decatur and Allen.

Phillips, Lewisville's Director of Human Resources since January 2023, moves into oversight of Human Resources, Municipal Court, Finance, Budget and Library and Arts. Under his leadership the HR department lowered employee turnover and vacancies, and he helped launch the Lewisville United Volunteers program this spring.

Filling the HR Director post Phillips is vacating, the city named Leila Peeples, who most recently served as Assistant Director of Human Resources for the City of Fort Worth. She brings more than 20 years of public and private sector HR experience, including a stint as Chief Human Resources Officer at MedStar Mobile Healthcare.

Collectors have two reasons to head to NTX Arena this weekend, as the NTX Sports Card Show + TCG and the NTX Comic Show both run Saturday and Sunday, August 8 and 9.

The sports card show brings vendor tables stacked with trading cards, memorabilia and trading card games, plus on-site grading services, while the comic show next door caters to collectors chasing back issues, graphic novels and pop culture merchandise.

Both shows run out of NTX Arena at 2401 S. Stemmons Freeway, with single-day and weekend passes available online in advance or at the door. Kids are welcome with a parent, making it an easy way to spend a hot August weekend indoors.

The City of Lewisville has moved to a new online system, JustFOIA, for residents submitting and tracking public information requests, replacing the previous GovQA platform.

Anyone with a pending request already in the GovQA system does not need to do anything. Those requests stay active and will keep moving through city staff until they are finished.

All new requests need to go through the city's Open Government page, where the JustFOIA portal is now live. Residents with questions about the switch or an existing request can call the City Secretary's Office at 972-219-3404.

Lewisville Lake was not always called that. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers did not officially rename the Garza-Little Elm Reservoir to Lewisville Lake until 1971, even though Congress had approved the name Lewisville Dam back in 1955. Signs proclaiming Lewisville Lake were not put up around the reservoir until 1976.
